Bolivia, Chile agree to
strengthen bilaterial ties
Chile's president-elect Michelle
Bachelet and Bolivian President
Evo Morales pledged here on
Friday to forge stronger links
between their two countries.
"In this welcome meeting we
expressed our willingness to
work together on a bilateral
agenda," Bachelet told reporters
after their half hour meeting.
Morales is in Chile to attend
Bachelet's inauguration ceremony
on Sunday.
Before his 4 p.m. (1900 GMT)
meeting with Bachelet at the
Andres Bello Diplomatic Academy,
Morales met Ricardo Lagos,
Chile's current president, at
the La Moneda Palace.
Later on Friday, Morales is
expected to take part in
commemorative event at Chile's
National Stadium, which will be
presented by local left wing
groups.
Chile and Bolivia have not had
diplomatic relations since 1978,
because of an argument over a
Bolivian claim to Antofagasta,
the country's only outlet to the
sea which it lost to Chile in
the 19th century.
