Fidel
Castro: Cuba Economy Stable
While speaking at the 15th
anniversary of the Central
Computer and Electronics Palace,
Cuban President Fidel Castro
asserted the island is on solid
bases in different fields.
"Our people will be surprised
about the Energy Revolution´s
speed and the economic resources
it will provide," Fidel said,
noting that energy generation
grows at 80,000 kW per week and
the battle against power
shortage is succeeding.
By the beginning of 2006, the
statesman assured, the Cuban
energy revolution was a decisive
fight from which useful lessons
could be derived.
That program, emerging from
serious energy problems in 2004,
was constantly analyzed, along
with the experience of dealing
with hurricanes, and has enabled
acquisition of safer and more
efficient generators, which are
strategically combined with
engines.
Fidel Castro also referred to
education and health
achievements, emphasizing the
work at the Latin American
School of Medicine where over
12,000 young people from Latin
America, Caribbean and the US
are studying.
"The efforts there have allowed
us to send doctors where needed,
such Pakistan or Guatemala," he
explained.
He added that medical staff
could have even aided Hurricane
Katrina victims if Washington´s
egoism and arrogance allowed it.
During the ceremony, where 300
Youth Computer and Electronics
Clubs were opened, the head of
state stressed the importance of
that branch for social
development.
He reminded of the nation´s
steps since that movement was
created in 1897, highlighting
the new technological
socialization with projects for
children, youths, the elderly
and disabled people and the
production of educational
multimedia and websites.
Opened by Fidel Castro March 7,
1991, the Central Computer and
Electronics Palace has graduated
more than 18,000 students,
including blind people.
