Central
America Rises up against Border
Wall
Guatemalan social groups are
coordinating Monday with their
Central American counterparts
the creation of a common front
on the new US anti-migration
policy that includes
construction of a border wall.
"Morally speaking, the wall is
counterproductive," said
economist Carlos Barreda, member
of the Social Organizations
Staff, announcing contacts with
regional entities and immigrants
in the US to reject this policy.
For Barreda, the law, under
discussion in the US Senate,
will stress the immigrant work
force from toughening
restrictions for its
contracting.
The Border Protection,
Anti-terror and Migration
Control Law, passed by the House
of Representatives, criminalizes
11 million undocumented people,
sanctions those helping them,
limits access to courts and
speeds deportations.
Indigenous people, campesinos
and women and others, sent a
letter to the US Senate warning
on the disastrous consequences
for Central American economies
if the final law were approved.
Likewise, they launched a
signature collection campaign
and strengthened links with
Central American bodies to
create a common front against
that policy.
