Brazilian Military Occupy
Favelas
Shanty towns in northern Rio de
Janeiro were entered and
occupied by 300 military police
attempting to recover ten rifles
and a gun stolen from a barracks
hours earlier, Jornal do Brasil
informed today.
Hooded thieves attacked
Transportation Central, used as
a materiel depot by the Eastern
Command headquartered in Sao
Cristovao, and made the 10
soldiers resting in a guard
house surrender their weapons.
According to military
intelligence, an ex army
corporal is wanted as a suspect
in the theft, believed to have
been carried out to reinforce
drug dealers in Alemao.
The military police deployed in
the shanty towns received
support from the BOPE special
police and the operation was
authorized by Marcelo Itagiba,
Rio Public Security secretary,
at the army´s request.
