Tax Agreements
Israel, South Korea, and
Switzerland asked the Government
of Costa Rica to negotiate
agreements aimed at avoiding
double taxation that is part of
the Reforma Fiscal before the
Legislature and approved in
first reading.
The Ministro de Hacienda
(Revenue Service) Francisco
Fonseca, said that the
negotiations are in their early
stages.
The agreements to prevent double
taxation enable nations to
negotiate the conditions to
prevent that their nationals
living abroad suffer a double
imposition on their income.
Even though Costa Rica cannot
currently charge the residents
here for income earned
elsewhere, the agreements are
hailed as an important condition
to attract foreign investment.
Other countries that are
negotiating such agreements with
Costa Rica include Spain and
Canada.
An agreement to exchange
information with the United
States has been in place since
1990, but it covers only the
income and sales taxes.
