Colombia govt-AUC rebel peace process has flaws: OAS
The Organization of American States' (OAS) verification mission in Colombia said on Thursday that the country's peace process with the rebel military group of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) suffered various flaws.

AUC fighters have been handing in their weapons at various sites across Colombia, but the OAS says some fighters have taken up arms again elsewhere in the country.

In early December, the AUC broke its cease-fire agreement by fighting a battle with left-wing rebels near the northeastern town of Curumani, killing eight.

Colombian authorities have to act against the complaints of renewed paramilitarism, Sergio Caramagna, head of the mission said.

But Caramagna added that Colombia's defense ministry had replied quickly and thoroughly to the complaints, and the flaws inthe process were small compared to its achievements. He also expressed hope that the process could reach its conclusion.

The OAS also announced measures to boost verification inspections by sending more staff to demobilized areas.

The AUC is a right-wing military group, which was established in the 1980s to fight the country's two left-wing rebel guerrilla groups. The disarmament process began in 2002, and the bulk of the AUC's 28,000 fighters have demobilized.
