Colombia's intelligence agents seize 13.5 kg of uranium
Intelligence agents have seized 13.5 kg of uranium here which two Colombians attempted to sell to armed rebel groups, Colombia's intelligence chief said on Thursday.

Brigadier General Gustavo Matamoros Camacho said a man and a woman who were smuggling the radioactive material were arrested inan industrial neighborhood of the Colombian capital Bogota on Feb.24.

The material was intended for the highest bidder, and the two suspects might have tried to contact a Colombian rebel group, saida spokeswoman for the Attorney General's office. The smugglers valued the material at 315 million U.S. dollars.

However, the uranium is depleted and unusable for either making a nuclear weapon or a dirty bomb, mining ministry officials said.

The two suspects have been released on bail, but they are still being investigated and if convicted they could face up to six years in jail.
