Colombian president registers
for re-election
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe
Velez on Wednesday officially
registered himself as a
candidate for the country's May
general elections.
Uribe made the registration at a
ceremony presided over by Alma
Beatriz Rengifo, the nation's
registrar, the government said
in a statement.
Accompanying Uribe were his wife
Lina Moreno, Vice President
Francisco Santos and his
campaign team.
"We ask God to help us to be of
use to Colombia and not to allow
us to fail in matters that are
vital for the nation," Uribe
said following the signing
ceremony.
Some 26.5 million Colombians are
entitled to vote in the upcoming
elections, in which Uribe are
likely to be re-elected after a
constitutional reform he has
pushed through to allow him two
consecutive terms in office.
Nearly 73 percent of voters
surveyed in a recent poll said
they supported Uribe, compared
with less than 10 percent
favoring his closest rival
Horacio Serpa.
His approval ratings, running
from 69 percent to 72 percent
throughout his presidency, are
the highest ever recorded for a
Colombian president.
Uribe's campaign promises
include extending his Democratic
Security policy, going after
armed groups and supporting the
reintegration into society of
rebels who choose to renounce
violence.
