Costa
Rica Stimulates Exports of
Plantains
Costa Rican growers from the
southwest of the country aim at
the exports of plantains since
October last year and presently
a 60 Metric Tonnes per
week is exported to the United
States.
The success of these exports was
also made possible by the
Ministry of Agriculture, which
has supported the construction
of 700 hectares in the western
province of Puntarenas.
Meantime, 500 hectares have
actually been planted. The
product is to be exported in a
processed form (portions of
fried green bananas) and about
35.000 Metric Tonne should be
exportable this year, to bring
in us$6 million in returns.
