Araya and Arias Families Get Closer Again

Araya and Arias Families Get Closer Again
Everyone assures that the visit by Fabio, Carlos Luis and Jhonny Araya Monge  at the house of "unofficial" president-elect, Oscar Arias, is just a courtesy call and nothing more. However, others see it as a getting closer of the the families of Rolando Araya and Luis Alberto Monge with the Arias.

Jhonny Araya is the Mayor of San José, while is brother Rolando Araya wa a presidential candidate in 2002, defeated by Abel Pacheo ad Luis Alberto Monge is a former president.

The Araya and Monge family all belong to the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) and were critical of the constitutional change made to allow Arias to run for the presidential chair again.

Arias told the press afterwards that "we did not speak of Rolando". Jhonny Araya later told the press that "Rolando has always been in the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), however, he distanced himself from the presidential campaign over the parties position on the Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC), of which he does not share."

Both men said that the discussion was cordial and included talks on the new legislature, a need to generate a consensus, the needs of San José, public transportation and getting people to move back to the city.

"We never spoke of Luis Alberto, even though he is family", said Jhonny Araya.

Luis Alberto Monge was very critical of the re-election of Arias and at one point called the election invalid, saying that forces manipulated the changing of the Political Constitution of the country for their own interest and not for the interest of the country.

Oscar Arias (R) welcomes Jhonny Araya (L) and Carlos Luis Araya Monge (C) at his home yesterday. The two families had been distanced for some time.
