Taxi
Fare Increase Approved
Riding a taxi will soon cost
more, 6% more, with the approval
of the increase by the Autoridad
Reguladora de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep).
The increase will mean an
additional ¢20 colones to the
first kilometre and then add
another ¢20 colones to each
kilometre following on all three
types of taxi vehicles: sedan,
rural and equipped for the
disabled.
The increase will see the
starting fare of a taxi at ¢350
colones, up from ¢330 and each
additional kilometre charged at
¢320 from ¢300 colones. The rate
for wait time also increases
from the current ¢1.790 to
¢1.905 colones per hour.
What the increase means in real
terms is an increase of ¢90
colones for a ride from downtown
San José the Parque La Sabana or
¢200 colones to Pavas, for
example.
The "demora" - stalled in
traffic - rate will also jump as
a result of the increase. For
taxi operators using sedans the
rate jumps from ¢3.000 to
¢3.200, for rural from ¢3.030 to
¢3.230 and for disable vehicles
from ¢2.900 to ¢3.100 colones.
The demora kicks in when a taxi
is stuck in traffic, measured by
a system when the vehicles does
not move more than 10 kph during
six minutes. The demora rate
makes the ride more expensive
the slower the vehicle moves.
The increase will go into effect
once it is published in the
official government newspaper La
Gaceta, which is expected within
5 working days.
