Guatemala with Pendent
Signatures
After 10 years of peace in
Guatemala, one of the greatest
debts is clearing of truth,
justice and compensation to the
thousands of victims of the
armed conflict in this Central
American country.
Edda Gaviola, Executive Director
of the Center for Legal Action
on Human Rights, made this
statement in the 3rd Meeting on
Racism and Genocide here
Wednesday.
During the 36 years of civil
war, more than 200,000 people
died, mostly indigenous people.
Though there has been economic
compensation to the victims,
these wounds are too much deep,
Gaviola said.
Juan Francisco Soto, Coordinator
for Justice and Reconciliation
for the Center for Legal Action
on Human Rights, talked about
impunity.
Despite signing of peace
threatening and raids against
human rights activists continue,
and deep investigations have not
been carried out, he said.
Gaviola said there is a need for
a new process in Guatemala for
the story not to be repeated.
