Nicaragua Mayors Sidestep to
Venezuela Oil
The Association of Nicaraguan
Municipalities (AMUNIC) is
arranging fuel purchases from
Venezuela after what it
described as a lack of federal
desire to support the
initiative.
AMUNIC president and Mayor of
Managua, Sandinista Dionisio
Marenco talked of two variants:
gas and diesel imports through
Costa Rica or Honduras, or by
boosting official awareness to
access the fuels.
AMUNIC and States Run Petroleos
de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) have
arranged for an annual fuel
supply of 10 million barrels
under preferential terms, yet
President Enrique Bolaños
refuses to back the operation.
Neighboring El Salvador and
Honduras have similar
agreements, but Bolaños says the
deal has political connotations.
