Nicaragua, Poor Attendance to
Electoral Revision
Without noticing the official
results of the electoral
verification carried out the
last two weekends in Nicaragua,
the generalized opinion Monday
is that attendance of voters was
poor.
Preliminary data estimate that
less than 35 percent out of the
over three million Nicaraguans
older than 16 years old verified
if their personal data appear
correctly reflected on the
electoral roll, differently from
the number of 53 percent
expected by authorities.
However, people´s response was
doubled in relation to the very
first weekend when reports
revealed an attendance of less
than 15 percent, said Roberto
Rivas, president of the
Electoral Supreme Council.
The objective is to purge the
electoral roll of deceased
people, possible changes of
address, mistakes and to cover
inclusions of those reaching 16
years old for coming elections
on November 5.
Rivas attributed the poor
attendance to the people's
confidence on their inclusion in
the lists and to that
Nicaraguans, he said, "leave
everything for the end".
Nicaraguans will vote the future
President of the nation, the
deputy President, the 90
deputies to the National
Assembly and the country's 20
representatives to the Central
American Parliament.
