Wife Killer In La Reforma
Waiting Appeal of Preventive
Detention
Luis Fernando Burgos, accused of
killing is wife, doesn't like
being in prison after a judge
ordered him to six months
detention as investigators
continue to search more evidence
to lock up the case.
On Thursday, Burgos was moved
from the cells at the Hatillo
police station for a more secure
cell at the La Reforma prison in
Alajuela, the same prison that
held former presidents Miguel
Angel Rodriguez and Rafael Angel
Calderón while under preventive
detention.
Officials say that Burgos had
too many liberties at the
Hatillo police station, being
allowed to use the telephone
liberally and frequent visitors,
something that irritated greatly
the family of Maureen Hidalgo,
who through their lawyer have
said they will do all possible
to ensure that their son-in-law
never leaves jail.
Burgos, within his rights, has
made his appeal to the
preventive detention. Burgos'
lawyer will argue that his
client poses no risk of flight
and names as witnesses the same
crown prosecutors who are
accusing him of the crime.
Burgos, like his dead wife, was
a public defender for the Poder
Judicial and is well versed on
the law. Last Thursday, official
notice came as authorities of
the Poder Judicial gave him the
news that he was fired from his
job.
Next week a court is expected to
make a decision on the appeal
that could see Burgos' detention
change to house arrest.
Maureen's body was found on July
16, thrown over the side of the
road near Rio Grande on route to
Atenas, Investigators also found
a sheet what was used to wrap
the body and a pillow case
several kilometres from where
the body was found in a
subsequent search for evidence.
