Rains leave at least 12 dead or
missing in Chile
At least 12 people had been
killed or were missing after
intense rains caused swollen
rivers and landslides in
southern Chile, authorities said
on Wednesday.
Among those killed were a police
officer and three men from
Chile's volunteer fire-fighting
corps, who had been searching
for victims after one landslide,
officials said.
Heavy rains caused rivers to
overflow, including the Bio Bio,
one of the country's biggest
waterways. The government had
declared the Bio Bio region a
disaster zone, after a landslide
buried 10 people there.
Power lines and highways were
cut off in some areas, rail
services were interrupted, and
water flowed through the streets
of the southern city of Los
Angeles and the port of
Valparaiso.
President Michelle Bachelet
traveled to the site of the
landslide that buried 10 people
in the Bio Bio region, 500 km
south of the capital, and
watched rescue workers searching
for the victims.
Interior Minister Andres
Zaldivar said the death
