Carter May Block US Nicaragua
Meddling
For analyst Aldo Diaz, the
presence of former US president
James Carter Tuesday in Managua
could impede a probable meddling
of the Organization of American
States (OAS) in the Nicaraguan
electoral process.
Diaz considers that the pressure
Washington is exerting on the
regional body is too strong.
The US has repeatedly warned it
will only recognize the
government elected
"democratically" and announced
its electoral preferences in the
Central American state.
Recently, it gave out its
support for former banker
Eduardo Montealegre and the late
former Managua mayor Herty
Lewites, ignoring Daniel Ortega,
leader of the Sandinista
National Liberation Front, and
Jose Rizo, candidate of the
Constitutionalist Liberal Party.
The expert also opined the 34
OAS member nations are divided
over the eventual interference
in the Nicaraguan electoral
process ending November 5 with
the general elections.
Carter arrived here yesterday to
monitor the electoral process,
and Diaz said the former head of
state is trying to move away
from the traditional imperialist
policy the US has implemented in
the southern nations.
"I think Carter and the Center
by the same name in some cases
can represent a guarantee, as
happened in Venezuela during the
referendum," the analyst
recalled, alluding to the ex US
leader´s validation of the
electoral practice that
reaffirmed Hugo Chavez as
president.
The OAS has had a mission of
observers in Nicaragua since
March to see the development of
the electoral process. The
Carter center is also authorized
as viewer.
