Panama Meeting to Analyze
Disasters
Experts from Central America and
Mexico will review projects
being carried out as part of the
Mesoamerican Initiative on
Prevention and Mitigation of
Natural Disasters (IMPMDN), at a
meeting slated for February 2-3
in this capital.
The proposal is part of the
eight-point Puebla-Panama
Project that includes Mexico,
Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador,
Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica
and Panama.
The analysis of the achievements
of the Central American Atlas on
Natural Disaster Threats and the
development of a regional
insurance market against risks
of catastrophe are the two main
issues to be discussed at the
meeting, according to official
sources.
The experts will also debate the
need to establish or strengthen
a regional system to monitor
climate variability to determine
its influence on the whole
region´s vulnerability.
Central America is one of the
world´s most sensitive areas to
natural threats.
Therefore, an IMPMDN action
plan, in response to its
memorandum of understanding,
aims to reduce Mesoamerica´s
vulnerability.
