Time For Political Patronages
The political payoffs are just
beginning. Some are public, like
the appointment of Róger
Carvajal, husband of first vice-presidnet,
Lineth Saborí0, who was
confirmed by the board of
directors of the Radiográfica
Costarricense S.A. (RACSA), as
the new boss beginning February
1.
The confirmation of Carvajal got
the blessing of Pablo Cob,
executive president of the
Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE), Racsa's
parent company.
The appointment has generated
much controversy by both
insiders at Racsa and political
opposition to the government.
Some of the strongest voices
opposing the naming is the Unión
Costarricense de Cámaras y
Asociaciones de la Empresa
Privada (Uccaep) and the Unión
de Cámaras, who say that
although the naming is totally
legal, is ethical wrong.
Carvajal will receive some ¢128
million colones (us$256.000) for
what could be only six months on
the job, as it has been custom
for a new government to replace
heads of state institutions. A
new government will be sworn in
on May 8.
Another not so talked about
patronage is the possible
appointment by president Pacheco
of his son to the Junta de
Administración Portuaria y de
Desarrollo Económico de la
Vertiente Atlántica (Japdeva).
