Thousands Flock to Handal´s
Burial
The Salvadoran people along with
representatives of the
hemisphere´s governments,
parties and organizations are
attending Sunday the
revolutionary leader Schafik
Handal´s burial at Los Ilustres
cemetery.
The ceremony will start once the
cortege leaves El Salvador
University to the Cathedral,
where a funeral mass will be
offered before taking him to the
graveyard.
Handal, Farabundo Marti National
Liberation Front (FMLN) senior
leader, died of a heart attack
January 24 upon his return from
attending President Evo Morales´
inauguration.
On Saturday evening, the Central
American Parliament posthumously
granted the FMLN leader the
"Special Acknowledgement of
Honor to the Merit", the highest
decoration given to statesmen,
illustrious people or those
outstanding for a brilliant
performance.
Likewise, Sandinista National
Liberation Front head Daniel
Ortega conferred upon Handal the
Augusto Cesar Sandino order
while the Mayor´s Office
bestowed him the San Salvador´s
Merit Son ribbon in recognition
of his fight for democracy,
peace and reconciliation.
Delegations from Venezuela,
Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia,
Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala and
the Dominican Republic, among
others, are bidding farewell to
the revolutionary leader.
