Salary Reduction for Nica
Officials
Sandinista deputy and president
of the Health Workers
Federation, Gustavo Porras,
Friday announced he would
propose a bill to the National
Assembly reducing public
officials´ salaries to resolve
the demands of social sectors.
Porras explained this would be
similar to what Bolivian
President Evo Morales did,
adding that the legislation
would set a salary maximum of
2,500 dollars a month for the
president, which could not be
exceeded by any public official
in the country.
According to the Sandinista
deputy, the measure, encouraging
savings of over 12 million
dollars, would favor education
and health sectors which demands
have been ruled out by the
government under pretext of lack
of funds.
Health workers have been on
strike for more than two months
and the federation has just
announced they would join the
demonstrations without closing
emergency centers, as has been
done in their attempt to,
unsuccessfully thus far,
pressure Nicaraguan authorities.
Education workers will also
carry out protests beginning
February 6, accusing the
President Enrique Bolanos
administration of lacking
political will to solve the
situation.
Porras called on the Nicaraguan
people to support the social
sectors"
