Honduras Premieres President
From Friday Honduras will have a
new leader, Manuel Zelaya, who
is receiving the ceremonial sash
at Tegucigalpa´s National
Stadium.
Presidents Abel Pacheco (Costa
Rica), Oscar Berger (Guatemala)
and Elias Antonio Saca (El
Salvador), Alvaro Uribe
(Colombia), Vicente Fox (Mexico)
as well as Felipe de Borbon,
Prince of Asturias and
personalities from 40 nations
are in this capital to attend
the inauguration.
More than 2,000 police officers
and servicemen, supported by the
Air Force, were mobilized
Thursday to watch over security
during festivities in this
country, one of the most violent
in Latin America.
During his term of office,
Zelaya has to face the
consequences of the repressive
police applied by outgoing
Ricardo Maduro, high poverty
plus budget limitations.
Local media revealed that
Hondurans expect the new
statesman will allude to those
problems during his inaugural
speech, scheduled for midday.
Parliament Speaker Roberto
Micheletti will invest Zelaya,
53, with the ceremonial sash.
The new president is swearing in
his ministerial cabinet Saturday
in this stadium.
