Bus Fares Increases Around
the Corner
If you didn't fill up yesterday
you are in for a surprise
starting today, as gasoline
prices jumped ¢35 colones for a
litre of super, ¢35 colones for
regular and ¢16 colones for
diesel. For those who plan to
leave their cars at home, they
will also be surprised as bus
fares are going up as well.
The Autoridad Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (Aresep) -
the government body that
regulates public prices and
services - has received ten
requests for bus fare hikes that
affect various routes, including
city buses like the Sabana and
intercity routes like San José
to Cartago, Puntarenas and
Limon.
Going to Heredia or Alajuela
from San José and back will cost
more as soon as the approval is
given by the Aresep following a
public meeting that affect many
of the 800 bus routes in the
country.
The request for increases is as
low as 13% to as high as a 75%
hike for the Alegria-Siquirres
route.
Because the request takes in
many different communities, the
Aresp will hold public meetings
in different locations on
different days to give the
public a chance to know what
increase is being asked and to
make their statements.
Once approved by the Aresep, the
notice is then required to be
published in the official
government newspaper, La Gaceta,
at which time bus companies can
increase their tariffs.
