Guatemalan Left Mourns Handal
Guatemalan progressives expressed Thursday that the death of Salvadoran Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) leader Schafik Handal is an irreparable loss for all of Latin America.

The revolutionary leader died suddenly Tuesday while returning from Bolivia, where he had attended President Evo Morales´ swearing-in.

Former guerrilla Major Ricardo Rosales stated that Schafik was known for being friendly and respectful of positions of every revolutionary movement.

Meanwhile, Hector Nuila, secretary general of former Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity political party, highlighted his strength of principles, range of criteria and solidarity towards Latin American progressive bodies.

For his part, New National Alliance Foreign Affairs Secretary Max Cabrera declared the historic FMLN leader was a very clever and respectful politician.

Representatives of various Guatemalan progressive parties are departing for El Salvador to attend Handal´s burial on Sunday.

His remains will be laid in state at the Legislature headquarters, where there will be a wake in his memory.
