Most Voters Will Vote Same
A recent survey of Costa Rican
voters revealed that 77% of the
electorate is likely to vote for
their own political party.
The survey, conducted by the
Demoscopía polling firm and
reported Jan. 25, showed that
only 21% of voters are likely to
vote outside of their
traditional party affiliation.
In the past, voters have
alternated electiing either the
Partido Unidad Social Cristiana
(PUSC) or the Partido Liberacion
Nacional (PLN), the two
mainstream parties.
In 2002, a third party, the
Partido Accion Cuidana (PAC)
came in third and forcing a
run-off election when neither
the PUSC or PLN candidate were
each able to pull the required
40% of the vote. Abel Pacheco of
the PUSC won the run-off
election, breaking the
alternating pattern.
For 2006, though there are more
presidential candidates on the
slate than in the past, PLN
candidate is a shoe-in by all
expectations.
Costa Rica's presidential
elections are scheduled for
Sunday Feb. 5.
