UN halts food distribution to
displaced Colombians after
guerrilla attack
The UN World Food Program (WFP)
has decided to suspend food
distribution to displaced people
in Colombia following a
guerrilla attack, the Colombian
government said on Tuesday.
The guerrillas attacked a truck
carrying a ton of food aid to
nearly 20,000 displaced people
in 18 settlements in Antioquia,
northeast Colombia, last Friday.
The WFP said it will halt
deliveries until the security of
its staff is guaranteed.
In recent months, armed groups
assaulted WFP in Choco
department, west Colombia, and
Meta in the central part of the
country.
Colombia has suffered an armed
conflict for more than four
decades, with more than 5,000
people dead each year and
thousands of families displaced.
