Honduran Catholics Slam Neolibs
The Catholic Church said in this
capital that the neoliberal
economic model developed in this
country has only privileged
minorities and impoverished over
80 percent of seven million
Honduras.
The new officials" first
responsibility is solidarity
with those excluded, to whom
funds from canceling of the debt
should be destined, said this
religious institution top-chief
Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez.
Addressing the nation Monday,
the priest urged the
government-elect and new public
officials to become faithful
servers of the population, and
exhorted leaders to leave aside
particular interests and boost
plans and development programs
already conceived.
Rodriguez recalled that along
with each vote, people hope for
deep changes for a better
future, and said that debt
relief funds should be open,
organized and effectively
distributed.
The debt dispensation allows the
country to provide $212 million
annually to be invested in
drinking water, sanitation,
school snacks, education,
health, medicines, irrigation
and other expenses.
