Moviles Eyes Costa Rica
Wireless Market
Telefonica Moviles SA is eying
the imminent privatization of
Costa Rica's wireless market, La
Gaceta de los Negocios reported,
citing unnamed Moviles sources.
The Costa Rican government is
currently mulling opening up its
mobile market which it will be
forced to do before Jan 2007, if
the country signs a free trade
agreement with the US, the
newspaper noted.
Costa Rica has one of the
highest concentration of mobile
phone use per capita with 286
minutes a month, La Gaceta said,
just behind the US and Japan.
Telefonica Moviles SA is the
wireless arm of Spanish carrier
Telefónica provides services to
nearly 50 million customers. It
operates in Argentina, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico,
Peru, and Spain (where it is the
#1 mobile carrier with almost 20
million customers).
It also manages operations for
its parent in Chile and Puerto
Rico; has formed a joint venture
with Portugal Telecom (Brasilcel,
marketed as Vivo) for holdings
in Brazil and Morocco; and it
holds UMTS licenses for Germany,
Italy, and Switzerland.
