Gasoline Price Hike Approved
If you drive, get ready to
loosen your wallet. The
Autoridad Reguladora de los
Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
yesterday approved a rise in the
price of gasoline, which will
take effect once it is published
in the official government "diario"
La Gaceta, which is expected by
late next week.
The approval means that gasoline
prices at the pump will jump ¢35
colones for a litre of super,
¢34 colones for regular and ¢16
for diesel. The approval was
based on a request by the state
monopoly on gasoline products,
Refinería Costarricense de
Petróleo (Recope).
Once published in the La Gaceta,
retailers will change their pump
prices to ¢457 colones (us$3.47
per US gallon) for each litre
super, up from the current ¢422;
¢436 for regular, up from ¢402;
and, ¢319 for diesel, up from
¢303.
The good news is that propane
(used in many homes for cooking)
and compressed natural gas (used
in gas converted vehicles) will
not be increasing.
The approved increase is not
solely based on the increased
cost of petroleum products, but
also included increased taxes on
gasoline products.
