Colombia dismantles 8 cocaine
labs
Colombia has dismantled eight
cocaine laboratories run by the
Self Defense Forces of Colombia
(AUC), a right-wing rebel group,
the Security Administration
Department (DAS) said on Sunday.
About 1.5 tons of cocaine, as
well as raw materials used in
the manufacturing process, were
seized in a four-day operation
carried out by 120 DAS agents.
The laboratories were all
located in the region of
Santander, northeastern
Colombia, and each of them could
produce two tons of cocaine a
month, said the DAS.
Media reports say that Colombia,
the world's largest exporter of
cocaine, exports 550 tons a
year, mainly to Europe and the
United States.
The AUC was founded in the 1980s
to defend landowners and others
against Colombia's two left-wing
rebel groups -- the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia and the National
Liberation Army -- which have
existed since the 1960s.
