Low Tricks in Chilean Polls
Continue
Just 24 hours before the polls,
and despite electoral
regulations, Chilean government
and opposition continued on
Saturday accusing each other of
cheating, thus breaking the
truce of the so-called period of
reflection.
Chief of opposition candidate
Sebastian Pinera"s team, Joaquin
Lavin, unleashed a political
storm by convening on Friday a
press conference to assure
journalists that available
surveys show a technical tie
between contenders.
According to Lavin, surveys give
Michelle Bachelet, of the
government party, just a
0.8-point lead over Pinera, so
the latter has a "clear chance
to win" on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the government has
interpreted these meetings as a
violation of electoral
regulations banning campaign 48
hours before elections, and
categorically denied having any
survey that shows such a slight
difference between the
presidential candidates.
"I want to deny categorically
the existence of any government
electoral survey, as claimed in
a press conference by Sebastian
Pinera"s team," La Moneda
spokesman Osvaldo Puccio said.
The latest poll, released on
Thursday by consulting firm
MORI, projected a triumph of
former Defense Minister Bachelet,
with 53 percent of votes,
against Pinera"s 47 percent.
The opposition team has said
Pinera will lose in the capital,
but win in other parts.
According to them, Pinera is
women"s favorite.
