El Gordo Lottery Winner
Claims Prize; Humble Farmer
Loses His Winner
The "loteria navideña" or "el
gordo" was held on December 18,
but it wasn't until yesterday
that the winner of the big prize
of ¢350 million colones
(us$700.000) came forward to
make a claim.
The winner presented the
complete (40 fracciones) winning
ticket with the number 03,
series 691, at a Banco de Costa
Rica in Cartago (the city where
according to lottery officials,
it was sold).
The name of the winner was not
made public. Winners of big
prizes are often hounded by
family, friends and wanna be
friends, so lottery officials
are keeping with a policy of
anonymity by not making the name
public to the press, but is
available at the lottery offices
for anyone who is interested.
In a related story, Don Eddie
Padilla Fallas, a 41 year humble
farmer, is living a nightmare
after discovering that he
mistakenly threw away his
winning lottery ticket, worth
¢44 million colones (us$88.000).
Family members say that Don
Eddie, who lives in San Ignacio
de Acosta, has been in tears
since discovering the mistake.
