Venezuela Warms US Poor
CITGO, a subsidiary of
Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA)
in the US, signed Friday an
accord to supply heating fuel at
reduced prices for the state of
Maine´s poor and indigenous
people.
The agreement is part of
President Hugo Chavez´s
initiative to directly supply
inexpensive fuel to US poor
communities.
CITGO undertook the provision of
Maine with 8 million barrels of
heating fuel, 40 percent
discount over the international
price, for 48,000 lower income
families.
The project includes giving
900,000 gallons to US indigenous
tribes Penobscot, Passamaquoddy,
Houlton and Mic Mac as well as
120,000 gallons to 40 refuges
for needy people in Maine.
In November 2005, Venezuela
announced an aid program for
Massachusetts and in December
for the Bronx neighborhood. The
plan may shortly extend to
Delaware, Vermont, Connecticut
and Pennsylvania.
