Limón With the Highest Number
of Bicycle Accident Deaths
Limón is the province with the
highest number of bicycle
accidents and deaths, accounting
for 11 of the 40 deaths
involving a cyclist for 2005. A
total of 278 persons lost their
lives in traffic accidents
during the year 2005, in the
majority of the cases
carelessness was the cause.
Following Limón, the province of
Puntarenas had 8 cyclists die in
traffic related accidents and
Heredia with 6. The provinces of
Alajuela, Cartago and Guanacaste
each had 4, while only 3
cyclists died in San José.
According to Tránsito officials,
poor visibility was the major
cause of the accidents and
deaths occurring between 6pm and
6am.
In the small towns of the
provinces and the port towns of
Puntarenas and Limón, the
bicycle is a common
transportation method used to go
to and from work, shopping or
just getting about. However, as
anyone who has driver through
places like Robles (east of
Puntarans) and outside downtown
Limón, most cyclists don't use
reflective clothing or markers,
including bicycles not having
front lights or rear and side
reflectors, making them almost
invisible at night.
Reflectors, according to the Ley
de Tránsito, are obligatory.
Finding a bicycle that complies
with that regulation is not
easy, including new bicycles
sold at retail outlets without
any type of reflective equipment
at all.
On the market there area a
number of reflective tapes that
can be attached to the frame of
a bicycle that will not rust,
the major reason why many don't
install or remove reflectors,
and will make the bicycle
visible to drivers. Tránsito
officials also recommend to wear
some type of reflective or light
coloured clothing.

The
absence of light reflectors and
carelessness are the major cause
of bicycle accident fatalities
in Costa Rica. Though there are
regulations requiring the use of
reflectors, many do not have
them installed or remove them to
prevent damage from rusting
reflectors. |
