Chile Will Keep Troops in
Haiti
The Chilean government will keep
nearly 1,000 troops in Haiti
until June, despite the serious
crisis in that poverty-striken
Caribbean country.
The decision will be reported to
the Senate in the next few days,
the ministers of Defense, Jaime
Ravinet, and Foreign Affairs,
Ignacio Walker, said in
statements to the local media.
Asked about the time the troops
will remain in Haiti, Ravinet
pointed out that the countries
of the region that make up the
United Nations Mission have
agreed to stay for one or two
more years.
He added that the true
discussion will take place in
June, when the new government
resulting from the upcoming
January 15 elections will be in
office.
The UN has not requested the
reinforcement of the troops, but
more helicopters, especially
during the general elections on
February 7.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister
Walker said that according to
Haiti´s election schedule, the
second round will be held on
March 19 and the new government
will take office on March 29.
Ravinet said that
representatives from all the
countries that make up the UN
peace mission in Haiti will meet
in Buenos Aires on January 16.
