Privatizing Try Condemned in
Honduras
Honduras´ Popular Bloc condemned
the campaign aimed at
privatizing Honduran
Telecommunication Enterprise (HONDUTEL)
through approval of a bill under
government analysis.
According to local media,
Wednesday over 1,500
demonstrators demanded that the
National Congress reject the
bill and call on the
administration to respect the
Honduran people"s interests,
most affected by such
governmental decisions.
Telecommunications, energy,
water and other public services
must be controlled by the
Honduran state, the Popular Bloc
demanded.
Telecommunication union members
led the peaceful demonstration
through the capital"s historic
center to the Legislature.
The Honduran Workers Unitarian
Federation singled out for
criticism, not only the
government, but some
businesspeople who want to
annihilate HONDUTEL through this
new law.
The initiative was conceived to
promote modern communication
under marketing rules able to
guarantee operation and
exploitation of the field in a
competitive regimen, including
the state.
"This new law is totally
irrelevant and harmful for the
interests of the Honduran people
and state," Honduran Workers
Unitarian Federation affirmed.
