Costa Ricans Upset with
President Pacheco
Abel Pacheco will finish his
tenure with low numbers in Costa
Rica, according to a poll by
CID-Gallup. Only 28% of
respondents rate the president’s
performance as good, down six
points since July.
Pacheco of the Partido Unidad
Social Cristiana (PUSC) was
elected in a run-off in April
2002 with 58% of the vote.
Costa Rican voters will choose
Pacheco’s successor on Feb. 5.
Former president Óscar Arias
Sánchez of the Partido
Liberacion Nacional Party
(PLN) has been the consistent
frontrunner and is expected to
take the presidency without any
serious challenge.
PUSC candidate Ricardo Toledo
who served in the Pacheco
administration, resigning as
Ministro de la Presidencia to
run for the presidential chair,
has been fourth or fifth in most
voting intention surveys.
The poll shows Pacheco with an
approval index of minus 12. The
approval index is a comparison
of the percentage of respondents
who either express satisfaction
or dissatisfaction with the
president. According to
CID-Gallup, only Rodrigo Carazo—who
governed from 1979 to 1982 -
held a lower approval index
during his last year in office.
