3 dead, 5 missing after cargo
ship capsizes in Nicaragua
Three people were killed and
another five missing when a
small cargo ship capsized in
Escondido River in Nicaragua, an
official from Nicaragua's Red
Cross confirmed on Friday.
The cargo ship with 19
passengers, eight sailors and 32
tons of cargoes on board sank
off the Escondido River on
midnight Thursday when it left
Rama port, 300 km east of the
capital city of Managua, for
Caribbean coastland.
An official from Red Cross in
Rama who gave his name as Cortez
said that eight sailors and 11
passengers had been rescued by
Friday night.
According to initial
investigations, he said, the
ship wreck was caused by
overload and mechanical
failures.
Search is still underway to find
the five missing, but Cortez was
afraid that some of them might
have already died.
