Produce Exports Fuel
Agriculture Development
Costa Rican produce exports
reached almost us$795 million
during the pas year, thanks to
an increase of US consumption.
In total 2,7 million metric tons
of bananas, pineapples, mangoes,
oranges, papayas, avocados and
lemons were exported. These
numbers confirm that the US is
consuming more fresh fruit and
is willing to pay for it,
according to the Costa Rican
minister of agriculture.
The best prices were paid for
avocados, with us$1.24 per kg.
Oranges made the worst prices,
with us$0.03 per kg. Costa Rica
is the main supplier of bananas
and pineapples to the US market.
The development of these
products is also responsible for
quadruplicating growth figures
from 0.8% in 2004 to 4.1% in
2005.
Other figures indicate that 35%
of the foreign currency entering
the country, are brought in
through agricultural exports.
Agriculture also generates 10%
of the GNP and offers employment
to 245.000 persons.
