Venezuelan Parliament
Leadership Swears in
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
is putting the new National
Assembly leadership on oath
Friday, with Nicolas Maduro as
speaker, Desiree Santos as first
deputy speaker, and Roberto
Hernandez as second deputy
speaker.
For the occasion, the ruling MVR
party summoned a popular rally
today up to the Miraflores
Palace.
The new Parliament settled
Thursday renewed Maduro´s
responsibility as head of the
entity for the 2006-2010 term.
The Venezuelan Parliament is
made up of 167 seats, with women
representing 30 percent of them.
Two new working commissions
joined the previous 15.
Parliamentarians highlighted the
anti-corruption fight will be
one of the institution´s key
goals, through a new legislative
body, the discussion of 77 laws,
and the development of what they
are calling social legislative
work.
To carry out the so-called
"street Parliament" project, MPs
will tour the country February 4
through April 13 to discuss
issues with the citizens.
The previous legislature left
for this year 22 bills. Another
55, divided in seven strategic
areas, will be added to its
agenda.
In the meantime, Maduro stated
Venezuela had never had such a
plural parliamentary
representation, with direct
participation of all social
sectors.
