Son of Cuban Five Pleads
Justice
The son of Antonio Guerrero, one
of the five Cubans jailed in the
US, called for the international
community to raise awareness and
back the legal process scheduled
for February.
From Panama on Thursday Antonio
Guerrero junior told Prensa
Latina that public opinion had
been an important support factor
since the Fiveīs unfair
sentencing seven years ago but
it is more vital at present,
mainly from US people.
Guerrero, along with Gerardo
Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez,
Ramon Labaņino and Rene
Gonzalez, are serving in maximum
security jails unlawful
sentences imposed by a Miami
court in 2002.
A five-expert UN panel, the
Special Group on Arbitrary
Detentions of the Human Rights
Commission in Geneva declared
their incarceration illegal,
while a three-judge panel of the
Atlanta 11th Circuit US Court of
Appeals reversed their
convictions.
Tony junior expressed his
fatherīs optimism about the
February hearing, which will
examine the Atlanta Court of
Appealsī decision to reverse the
convictions and hold a new
trial.
Guerreroīs son commentated that
all possible correspondence on
the Five is being sent to
Attorney General Alberto
Gonzalez to learn about the case
and attain a fairer judgment.
He praised his fatherīs artistic
talent, developed in prison,
highlighting the patriotic,
revolutionary and family
feelings illustrated in his
poems and paintings.
In his speech after being
condemned in 2000, Antonio
Guerrero said, “the presence of
the Five on US soil is
unquestionably my landīs right,
as the right of any other nation
to defend itself against those
trying to damage its people.”
