Truckers Will Not Support Civic
Movement
In an unexpected move, the La
Cámara de Transportistas
Unitarios (Truckers Association)
says they will not be part of
the Movimiento Cívico Nacional (MCN),
who have promised protests
against the Tratado Libre de
Comercio (TLC).
Truckers were the main force
behind the protests of 2005,
when in the MCN attempted to
paralyze services throughout the
countries, mainly to protest the
Riteve (teh annual vehicular
inspections company) monopoly.
Another win for the MCN and its
movement was to earn a 0.05%
increase in public employee
salaries.
Marjorie Lizano, a spokesperson
for the truckers association,
said that though the truckers
were a major force in the civic
movements last year, the
policies of the MCN are not in
accordance with the policies of
the truckers.
Albino Vargas, head of the
Asociación Nacional de Empleados
Públicos y Privados (ANEP) - the
largest of the public workers
unions- was quick to say that
the MCN is alive and well even
if without the support of the
truckers.
The MCN is gearing up for a
national strike by the end of
January. Though no date has been
announced, it will be before the
national elections on February
5. Details of the strike are
expected to be announced today.
