519 License Plates
Confiscated in Two Days
Tránsito officials made it
clear, there will be no grace
period for those who haven't
paid their 2006 Marchamo, the
annual vehicle circulation
permit that is due by December
31 each year.
As of close yesterday, 519
plates were confiscate and the
same number of ¢13.000 colones
fines issued to drivers who
insisted on using their vehicles
without the required permit. A
group of Tránsito officials has
been exclusively assigned to the
task of enforcing the Marchamo .
Many drivers use the excuse of
not having the Riteve - the
annual vehicular inspection -
due to the holiday closings. But
that did not convice traffic
officers who, according to Juan
Rodríguez, head of operations of
the Policía de Tránsito, who
will show no mercy.
In addition to the ¢13.000
colones fine, Tránsito officials
will issue a ¢10.000 colones
fine if the Riteve is not
current and will confiscate the
plate, which will then mean
getting the vehicle towed, a
walk home, paying the Marchamo
and then the lenghty process of
visiting the traffic court
office to get the plates back.
