Colombia rebel attacks cause
power cut
At least 150,000 people in
southwest Colombia suffered from
a power cut on Monday after the
country's largest rebel group
attacked two electricity towers
in the region, local authorities
reported.
The police said on Monday the
left-wing Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC)
attacked the power towers in the
Caicedoarea and dynamited eight
oil wells in the town of Orito
over the weekend, spilling crude
into the rivers of Guamez and
Putumayo.
Electricity supply has been cut
for three days in five
municipalities in the
southwestern jungle province of
Putumayo.
The police could not identify
the owners of the oil wells and
did not know how much they
usually produce.
The rebels killed 29 soldiers
and eight police officers in
lastmonth's attacks in Meta and
Choco provinces.
The FARC is Colombia's largest
rebel group with at least
17,000combatants. It is listed
by the United States and the
European Union as a terrorist
group.
More than 600 government troops
were killed by the FARC and
other rebel groups last year,
according to government figures.
