Colombian Officer Under Probe
for Abusing Soldiers
Colombia's military court Sunday
launched an investigation into
claims that Colombian army
officials abused soldiers during
training, saying the officers
found doing so will be jailed.
The report went public and
sparked a series of protests.
Under the pressure, the soldiers
of the Patriotic battalion
training camp were sent to
hospital.
Colombian army doctor Ricardo A
Romero Lascano said in a report
published by local media on
Sunday that senior officers had
tortured 21 junior officers and
foot soldiers, beating them and
burning at least six of them
with hot coals during the
training.
Reinaldo Castellanos, commander
of Colombia's army said, "I am
ashamed to have to inform the
country about this situation.
The conduct of these officers
went against military honor and
discipline."
Castellanos told reporters that
three officers, identified as
having abused their
subordinates, had been suspended
from their duty and more are
being investigated.
