Guatemala Readies Anti-CAFTA March
Guatemalan popular sectors announced a march for Feb 24 against the US-devised CAFTA-DR that will gather some 40,000 farmers, unionists, indigenous peoples, teachers and youth.

The march will start at the Obelisk, south of the capital, to end at the Constitutional Court, in the historic section.

Simultaneous vigils will take place at every Guatemalan embassy from Mexico throughout Central America.

Among CAFTA-DR´s negative effects on the region will be the ruin of small and mid-size businesses, the loss of thousands of jobs, and the disappearance of more affordable generic medicines.

The march begins a process of struggle, protests and denouncements against the CAFTA-DR and official neoliberal measures already affecting commerce and education.
