Donations from Taiwan
Under oath at a Court in San
Jose, second vice-president, Luis Fishman, declared that
President Abel Pacheco had been
aware of a us$300,000 donation
from Taiwan for his political
campaign leading to the 2002
election.
Fishman, who was elected
Vice-President then but whom
Pacheco isolated from any
duties since inauguration day,
pointed out that those funds
were eagerly expected for
Election Day.
Fishman also
mentioned thousands of dollars
donated by construction
companies, but was not specific
with names and amounts.
President
Pacheco has denied having any
knowledge of the donations.
Fishman and Pacheco had a
falling out before the election
of February 2002, but in
accordance with the Political
Constitution, Fishman's name
could not be removed from the
presidential ticket.
When Pacheco took office in May
of 2002, Fishman was asked to
stay away and though he
continued a second-vice
president "officially", he was
not given any duties and it was
made clear that he would have no
position in Pacheco's
government.
