In Jealous Rage Man Shoots Wife Five Times Then Kills Himself
A 33 year old man, identified as Raúl Jirón Reyes, decided to act on his jealous rage by shooting his wife five times, while she walked home with child in arms and her 18 year old brother. Reyes, thinking he had killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself.

The incident occurred Thursday evening in América de Upala, north of Alajuela.

The 24 year old woman, identified as Melba Castillo Estrada, is in hospital in delicate condition following the shooting. The man had used a .22 handgun, bullets impacting Estrada in various places of her body.

According to the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) investigators, the couple had separated late last year. Reyes had attempted in several occasions to take custody of their child and the woman had asked for protection, charging the man in the Juzgado Contravencional de Upala.

Witnesses say that Reyes met up with Estrada and demanded the child she was carrying in her arms or that he would kill her. Estrada's brother took the child from his sister's arm and fled, that is when shots were heard.

Thinking he had killed his wife with the five bullets, he was found some 500 metres from the scene with a bullet to the head. A bottle of liquor was found near the body. Police believe the man's death was a suicide, but nonetheless are making a complete investigation.

Both were Nicaraguan nationals living and working in Costa Rica.
