1.4 Million Mexicans Unemployed
Mexico closed the third quarter of 2005 with 1.4 million people unemployed, a report by the National Statistics, Geography and Information Technology Institute reports Wednesday.

In the period, the economically active population totaled 43.9 million people, of which over 42.5 millions (96.9 percent of the total) were unemployed.

Of all those who were able to get a job, 12.2 millions (28.7 percent of the total) continued working in the so called informal sector.

In the meantime, the underemployed population amounted to 2.7 millions (6.1 percent of the economically active population and 6.3 percent of employees.)

Though the 3.1 percent unemployment level in the 2005 October-December period was the lowest of the year, the unfulfilled employment demand continues being one of the main unresolved problems of the current administration, according to experts.
