Colombian drug tycoon arrested
in Venezuela
Colombian-born drug tycoon
Carlos Alonso Ojeda was arrested
here by police, according to a
statement released by the
Venezuelan attorney's office on
Saturday.
The statement said Ojeda is one
of the biggest drug lords in
Latin America, and ranks second
on the wanted list in Colombia.
Ojeda, 51, gained his Venezuelan
nationality in 1975 and was a
chief coordinating a Venezuelan
drug-trafficking network. He was
in charge of smuggling Colombian
drugs into Venezuela where they
would be transferred to markets
of the United States and Europe,
said the statement.
Each year, at least 150 tons of
cocaine are smuggled into the
United States and Europe via
Venezuela, which is a major
gateway for cocaine produced in
neighboring Colombia.
